This aspect of surgery is often overlooked by the ophthalmologist, but is of vital importance to the overall well-being of the patient and determines surgical outcomes.  Communication of critical information between the surgeon and anaesthetist can mean the difference between a successful outcome and a potentially sight or life--threatening outcome.  This lecture addresses the intra and post-operative issues and planning necessary to minimise risks and avoid complications.

Professor Peter Shah is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Supra-Regional Glaucoma Specialist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. He is also a Visiting Professor to the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology). He is Honorary Professor of Glaucoma at the Centre for Health and Social Care Improvement at the University of Wolverhampton.
