A suture to the wound may be necessary if the wound construction does not ensure anterior chamber stability. Other indications for suture placement include modification of corneal astigmatism, abnormal corneal pathology, large or small eyes and patients at risk of rubbing their eye. Passing the 10/0 nylon needle through the keratotomy wound is more safely performed if the viscoelastic device is kept inside the anterior chamber. The suture is not tied to enable insertion of the irrigation/aspiration probe for subsequent viscoelastic removal.
